An aortic aneurysm is a general term for any swelling or ballooning of the aorta up to one and a half its normal size – typically representing an underlying weakness in the wall of the artery at that location. And with blood pressure, and the pulsation of the heart pumping, this weakened area can enlarge. While the stretched vessel may occasionally cause discomfort, a greater concern is the risk of rupture which causes severe pain – a massive internal hemorrhage. Unless this is treated immediately, death can occur very quickly.
